He leaves behind two children: Virginia Brooks Robinson and her husband Michael of New Canaan, CT, and William Brooks and his partner DeShea of Atlanta, GA. Bill was also a proud grandfather to five grandchildren: Brooks Robinson, Lawrence Robinson, William Brooks, Carter Brooks, and Caroline Brooks.
Bill’s family roots extended to several siblings, including his brother John Brooks III and sisters Betty Brooks and Carole Brooks Galyon. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Louise Dortch Green and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss his quick wit and generous spirit.
Legal Career and Contributions
Having practiced law for over fifty-five years in Tennessee, Bill began his legal career in 1966 and worked primarily with the Waller firm and the Trabue firm earlier in his career. He served as house counsel for two different corporations throughout his career. Bill’s dedication to the community was recognized when he received the Nashville Bar Association’s Volunteer of the Year Award in 1999 for his pro bono legal work benefiting those in need.
Beyond his law practice, Bill served as the Judge of the Belle Meade City Municipal Court for approximately ten years, starting in 2006. His contributions to the legal field and the community at large left a profound impact on many lives.
Education and Military Service
Bill Brooks was a well-educated man, earning his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University in 1963, followed by a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1966. In 1992, he furthered his education by completing a Master of Education degree in Human Development Counseling at Vanderbilt. He also served honorably in the Tennessee Air National Guard for six years, from 1966 to 1972.
Personal Life
Outside of his professional endeavors, Bill had a zest for life. He loved reading, playing golf, and traveling to spend time with his children and grandchildren. The family cottage in Monteagle, TN held a special meaning for him, symbolizing cherished family gatherings and memories.
His sense of humor was infectious, and he was known for giving affectionate nicknames, including “Big Dude” and “Poppy.” Bill was also recognized for his entertaining dance moves, notably his unique style referred to as “famous rubber-legging.”
Memorial Service Details
The memorial service for Bill Brooks took place at 11:00 a.m. at St. George’s Episcopal Church, with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. prior to the service. A private family interment was scheduled to take place at St. John’s Churchyard in Ashwood, Columbia, TN. In lieu of flowers, the family requested contributions be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church or St. George’s Episcopal Church.
