Family and Personal Life

Dr. Gabhart’s family life was marked by resilience and love. She had a late brother, Burl, who lost his life during the Korean War, and a sister, Geneva Roberts, who passed away. She enjoyed close relationships with Geneva’s three daughters: Carol Cantrell, who holds both a PhD and MD, Janet James, and Cynthia Waldrop. In 2001, Dr. Gabhart married Dr. Herbert C. Gabhart, the former Chancellor of Belmont University. Through this union, she welcomed Dr. Gabhart’s two daughters, Betty Smith and Jo Ellen Aleshire, into her family, further expanding her family ties.

Dr. Gabhart is survived by her loving family, including her stepchildren and grandchildren, who continue to carry forward her legacy of compassion and commitment to education and community service.

In honor of Dr. Gabhart’s life and contributions, a memorial service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on July 28, 2025, at Nashville First Baptist Church.
