Born on March 6, 1939, in Nashville, Carolyn was the daughter of Louise “Babe” Fort and Sterling Fort. Tragically, Carolyn lost her father to tuberculosis at the tender age of two. Her mother later married Robert “Pops” Pillow, Sr., who lovingly raised Carolyn along with her sister Gwendolyn. From this union, Carolyn became the eldest of 11 children.

Education played a significant role in Carolyn’s life. She graduated from Pearl High School and continued her studies at Tennessee A&I, now known as Tennessee State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Education along with a minor in Early Childhood Education. During her time as a student, she participated in a civil rights march in downtown Nashville, highlighting her early commitment to social justice and community involvement.

Carolyn’s professional career began with roles at Citizens Savings Bank and Otey’s Grocery Store, where she met her future husband, Walter Riley. After dating for six months, they were married on August 3, 1962. Together, they welcomed five children into the world, and Carolyn dedicated herself to their success.

A devoted member of Corinthian Baptist Church, Carolyn actively served her community through various organizations and leadership roles. She sang in the church choir, led a Girl Scout Troop, and participated in her children’s PTA. Additionally, she was a member of the VA Bowling League and Zonta International, showcasing her diverse interests. Carolyn’s love for music extended beyond her church; she sang in both the Drake University Community Choir and The Old Ship of Zion Choir.

In 2000, Carolyn took a bold step into politics as the Democratic Nominee for the Iowa House of Representatives, District 73. Her commitment to education and the arts was evident as she and Walter established an Endowed Scholarship at Meharry Medical College to help aspiring medical practitioners.

Travelling was another passion for Carolyn, who explored various destinations including Europe, Japan, Israel, the Bahamas, and many U.S. locations. The family cherished spending Christmas holidays in Colorado and participating in the Winter Medical Conference in Hawaii. Her 52-year marriage to Walter stood as a testament to their shared love and partnership.

For over 30 years, Carolyn served as the office manager for Dr. Walter J. Riley, M.D., P.C., further establishing her presence in the Nashville community. Her dedication to both work and family was unwavering, and she became known for her nurturing spirit and involvement in local initiatives.

Carolyn’s viewing will be held on September 4, 2025, from 5-7 PM at Terrell Broady Funeral Home. The visitation will take place on September 5, 2025, from 10-11 AM, followed by the funeral at Belmont Church, located at 68 Music Square. She will be interred at Middle TN Veterans Cemetery. Funeral services are being provided by Terrell Broady Funeral Home, Inc.
