Vanderbilt Bowling Team Secures Fourth Place at Mid-Winter Invitational in Jonesboro
This past weekend, the vibrant city of Jonesboro, Arkansas played host to the exciting Mid-Winter Classic, where our very own Vanderbilt Bowling team showcased their incredible talent and determination on the lanes. Coming into this event as the No. 2-ranked team in the nation, the Commodores had their fingers crossed for a weekend to remember, and for the most part, they delivered!
Strong Start with Spectacular Scores
Over the course of three action-packed days, the Commodores put on quite a show, finishing with a tournament record of 7 wins and 5 losses. The first two days of competition were particularly stellar, as the team consistently knocked down over 1,000 pins in four out of five matches on the opening day. These impressive feats included victories against some tough opponents such as No. 14 Wisconsin Whitewater (1,074-931), Alabama State (1,138-912), and No. 5 Youngstown State (1,046-978). What a way to kick things off!
Improved Performance on Day Two
Not content to rest on their strong start, Vanderbilt kicked it up another notch on the second day. They faced off against the formidable No. 3 Jacksonville State (1,041-962), No. 10 Maryville (1,039-991), No. 8 Sam Houston State (1,042-1,042 in tiebreaker), and No. 13 McKendree (1,162-977). With every match, the team seemed to grow in confidence and energy, earning themselves a coveted place at the top of the leaderboard by the time bracket play rolled around on February 16th.
Bracket Play Challenges
Entering bracket play in second place set the Commodores up for what they hoped would be a strong finish. However, the competition got tougher and tougher. Unfortunately, their matches didn’t go quite as they had envisioned. The team lost to the same No. 3 Jacksonville State team they defeated earlier, falling short 4-0 and struggling to score over 200 in any of those games. To make matters tougher, they faced a second knockout from No. 7 Wichita State, again losing 4-0 despite showing some improvement in their scores.
The final showdown was an intense battle against No. 5 Youngstown State for third place. In a nail-biting match that went the distance, Vanderbilt narrowly lost 4-3. These losses meant that while the Commodores entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed, they ended up finishing in the fourth spot—the lowest finish possible for their ranking.
Shining Stars in the Spotlight
Despite the ups and downs of tournament play, there were certainly bright spots for the Commodores. Freshman sensation Sydney Bohn made quite an impression, finishing third individually with an outstanding average of 228.6 pins per game, and she earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Other notable finishes included Victoria Varano, coming in seventh with a solid average of 221.4, and Saphyre Nofuente, who finished twelfth, averaging 215.02 pins per game. The future looks bright!
Looking Ahead
Head coach John Williamson noted that the team’s execution and energy levels didn’t quite reach the heights they needed for victory this time around. But there’s no need to dwell on this event for long, as the Commodores will have a weekend off to regroup before heading to North Carolina for the A&T Stallings Invitational. This exciting competition is set for February 28 to March 2, and it will serve as the penultimate event of the regular season for these talented student-athletes.
