News Summary

Vanderbilt University women’s soccer head coach Darren Ambrose has appointed Jennie Clark as the new assistant coach. This strategic move comes as the team prepares for the upcoming soccer season, with Clark bringing extensive coaching experience from her time at Northwestern University and Minnesota Aurora FC. Clark’s past as a player in professional leagues and her coaching qualifications highlight her potential to enhance the program’s development and competitive strategies.

Nashville, TN – Vanderbilt University women’s soccer head coach Darren Ambrose has announced the hiring of Jennie Clark as the new assistant coach. This appointment fills the last coaching position on the staff ahead of the upcoming 2025 soccer season.

Clark’s hiring is seen as a strategic move by Ambrose, who highlighted her extensive experience and commitment to fostering both athletic and personal development among players. With her background as both a player and a coach, Clark is expected to bring valuable insights and mentoring skills to the program.

Coaching Experience

Jennie Clark comes to Vanderbilt after serving as an assistant coach at Northwestern University for the past two seasons. In this role, she played a significant part in developing the team’s competitive strategies and player skills. Prior to her time at Northwestern, Clark was the first assistant coach for Minnesota Aurora FC, where she helped lead the team to a perfect regular season and a successful run to the USL W-League playoffs’ quarterfinals.

Before taking her position with Minnesota Aurora FC, Clark coached at Utah Tech University for two seasons, where she was integral to the team’s transition from Division II to Division I. Her efforts during her tenure at Utah Tech included coaching seven players who earned All-Western Athletic Conference honors.

Playing Background

As a player, Clark has a distinguished history, highlighted by five years in professional soccer. Her professional career began with Sky Blue FC, which is now known as Gotham FC. Additionally, Clark played in Germany, where she represented prominent clubs such as 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig, SC Freiburg, and 1. FFC Frankfurt in the Frauen-Bundesliga.

During her collegiate career, Clark was a four-year starter at the University of Minnesota, where she made a significant impact in defense. In 2008, she helped the university attain its first NCAA Sweet 16 appearance. Throughout her college tenure, the Minnesota defense recorded an impressive 41 shutouts and allowed fewer than 20 goals in three of her four seasons. Her outstanding performance earned her SoccerBuzz fourth-team All-American honors and multiple all-district awards. In her senior year, she was also a candidate for the prestigious Hermann Trophy.

Clark has demonstrated resilience and a commitment to her sport, notably recovering from an injury early in the 2010 season to return to the field in less than six weeks. Her return coincided with Minnesota’s continued success, which included another Sweet 16 appearance that year.

Qualifications

Jennie Clark holds a B coaching license and a scouting license from the US Soccer Federation, which further underlines her qualifications and commitment to the sport. She is now set to leverage her skills and experiences to guide and develop young women athletes at Vanderbilt University.

Impact on Vanderbilt Soccer

The addition of Clark to the Vanderbilt coaching staff is anticipated to enhance the program’s trajectory as they prepare for the challenges of the 2025 season. Her expertise not only enriches the team’s tactical approach but also aligns with the university’s mission to develop well-rounded student-athletes both on and off the field.

As the 2025 soccer season approaches, all eyes will be on how Clark integrates her knowledge and expertise into Vanderbilt’s women’s soccer program, continuing the legacy of excellence in collegiate athletics.
