Firefighters in front of flames

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A fire that started in the ventilation system of Martin’s BBQ on 4th Avenue South in downtown Nashville, Tenn., brought Nashville Fire Department crews to the restaurant Tuesday. No one was hurt.

People who called 911 told dispatchers they could see flames coming from what was described as the restaurant’s ventilation equipment. When Nashville Fire Department crews pulled up, smoke was pouring from the building.

Firefighters knocked the fire down, and department officials said there were no injuries to workers, diners or crews.

The department has asked its fire investigators to look into how the fire started. Officials had not announced a cause by Tuesday afternoon.

The downtown restaurant is part of the Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joint chain and is laid out like the brand’s other locations, only on a much bigger scale. It sits a short walk from Lower Broadway and Music City Center, just steps from the honky-tonks that line the tourist district.

Beyond its main dining room, the location has a large beer garden out back with games, plenty of seating and a stage for live music, along with a private gathering space called the Rutledge Room for large groups. The kitchen is built around whole hog barbecue, the style the brand is known for.

In short, the emergency began with callers reporting flames from the ventilation equipment and ended with crews putting the fire out and confirming that nobody had been injured.

The Nashville Fire Department has not said when its investigators expect to finish their review of the fire.
