NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A young measles patient is out of the hospital in Nashville, and state health officials say their follow up has turned up no one in Tennessee who was exposed to the virus.

Staff at Vanderbilt’s pediatric hospital, Monroe Carell Jr., took the child in overnight Sunday into Monday, officials there said Thursday, and the stay was a short one. Vanderbilt University Medical Center later confirmed the child had been discharged.

The Tennessee Department of Health said the child does not live in Tennessee and did not catch the virus here. A department spokesperson, Bill Christian, said no exposures inside the state had been identified. Officials did not say where the child lives, how old the child is or whether the child had been vaccinated against measles.

The case is only the second tied to the Nashville-Davidson County region this year. State officials confirmed an earlier case in a Nashville resident in July.

Statewide, the health department’s data, last updated Oct. 23, counted at least nine other confirmed measles cases in 2026. Roughly a third involved children ages 5 to 17, and slightly more than half were adults between 18 and 49. About two thirds of the cases, around six, were in East Tennessee.

Measles spreads easily through the air and can lead to serious illness, especially in young children. Health officials have not announced any public exposure sites tied to this case. Families with questions about their vaccine records can check with their doctor or the Metro Public Health Department.
