NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A man crossing Gallatin Pike North with a grocery cart was killed early Wednesday after three vehicles hit him or his cart, and the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department is looking for two drivers who kept going.
It was 1:40 a.m. when the crash unfolded on the 1700 block of Gallatin Pike North, on the city’s east side. Police said a southbound Dodge Ram pickup went through the traffic light in front of 1748 Gallatin Pike and struck the cart, which knocked the man down into the road.
The pickup driver, 41, pulled into a nearby lot and called 911. He showed no signs of impairment, police said. While the man lay in the road, he was run over first by a red car and then by someone on a motorcycle. Neither of those drivers stopped.
The man had no identification with him. The Medical Examiner’s Office is helping police confirm who he was, and his name has not been released. Police have not said whether anyone will face charges, and they have released no description of the sedan or the motorcycle beyond the color of the car at this point.
The pickup was the first of the three vehicles involved and the only one whose driver stayed to help police piece together what happened. Conditions were poor. A light rain or drizzle was falling, and the light where he crossed had no pedestrian signals or painted crosswalks.
Detectives want to hear from anyone who knows the driver of the red sedan or the motorcycle rider. Tips can be called in to the department’s Traffic Division, 615-862-7738.
