Alfa Laval AB agreed to buy NAVTOR AS, a Norwegian maritime software company, for about $700 million in cash, adding electronic navigation and vessel-performance tools to the Swedish industrial group’s Ocean Division.
The all-cash price of 6.85 billion Swedish kronor was announced Friday. NAVTOR supplies e-navigation charts, voyage planning and performance analytics to shipowners and operators in more than 90 countries. It employs roughly 400 people across 13 offices and expects 2026 turnover of about $194 million.
Building a digital ocean stack
Alfa Laval said NAVTOR will join its Ocean Division next to StormGeo, the weather and routing business it already owns, and PortChain, a port-call optimization platform. The combination is meant to give customers a single vendor for charts, routing, weather and port scheduling as shipping lines digitize operations and face tighter emissions rules.
The purchase will be funded with cash on hand and existing credit facilities. Alfa Laval disclosed certain compliance matters at NAVTOR and said those issues are covered by deferred consideration and contractual protections negotiated as part of the deal.
Close and outlook
Closing is expected in the first quarter of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals. Alfa Laval plans to discuss the acquisition and its broader maritime digital strategy at a capital markets day on Nov. 18.
Industrial suppliers have been buying software assets that sit next to their hardware on ships. For Alfa Laval, which already sells heat exchangers, separators and scrubbers to the fleet, NAVTOR adds a recurring software revenue stream and a deeper relationship with the same customers.
